I was still in school at the time and last class of the day was English (Lang or Lit I can't remember). I got to the classroom just after 3pm our time, and noticed the tv up on the wall was on and thought it was weird because that was the first time I'd ever seen it on. Most of the class were already gathered round it and one of my pals greeted me at the door saying "a plane has flown into the World Trade Center." At the time I thought he meant a small bi-plane/whatever accident but then I think someone said "another one's gone in!" and everyone just stared at the telly (think it was on CNN) as the top of the second tower to be hit burned.
Then about 15-20 mins later the first tower came down and we were all like "holy shit......" - it was like something from a movie, and everyone's mouths were hanging open. What I remember most was the humongous smoke cloud that hung over NYC for several days afterward and the loads of little paper sheets flying about when they both came down. :( We didn't do anything in class that afternoon and I went straight home and stuck the news on and basically watched it for the rest of the day. I also made sure to keep the newspaper the following morning and I still have it...
I visited New York last February with my dad and during one of the tours, got off at St Paul's church, just beside the site. I got this weird feeling when I saw beyond the church that where 2 massive buildings once stood, there was just a huge square hole and honestly thought I was going to burst into tears. :/
Seeing things like this make me feel sad but at the same time pleased to see that people haven't forgotten about the event:
