Jane Eyre episode 3
Oct. 10th, 2006 05:38 pm-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jane embarks on a journey to fulfil the dying Mrs Reed's final wish. Once there Jane learns of a secret and a dreadful, vicious lie told for revenge. John Eyre, her uncle she didn't know existed, had wanted to adopt Jane since he was unmarried & did not have any children to pass his fortune to. Three years earlier he wrote to Mrs Reed asking to adopt Jane, but her aunt confesses that because she hated Jane so much, she wrote back saying that Jane had died of a fever whilst at Lowood. However, Jane forgives her aunt and after the funeral returns to Thornfield.

At Thornfield the guests are getting ready to leave and the rumours of a wedding between Blanche Ingram and Rochester are still rife. Jane sends her carriage on to the house while she walks the rest of the way. She meets Rochester sitting by a tree, walks home with him and is given a warm welcome back from Adele and Mrs Fairfax.

That night, Blanche is taking a stroll through the corridors and sees Rochester alone. He asks her if she likes what she sees and what she really wants. The guests leave the next day and Rochester sees the Ingrams off, Lady Ingram hinting that he should visit soon as their house isn't far away. Rochester however looks like he wishes he was elsewhere...

He finds Jane in his library with her 'escape' book that she read as a child. She puts it among his books and they go for a stroll. During their walk, Jane asks about whether Rochester is going to marry Blanche since she needs to help him pick a good school for Adele to go to. Rochester suggests Ireland for Jane's next governess position but she is clearly unhappy about the subject; she must leave Thornfield.

In an emotional state, Jane tells Rochester how she can't bear to think of leaving him and Thornfield, that it's the only place where she has been treated as an equal and hasn't been downtrodden upon. Rochester admits he has no intention of marrying Blanche – instead, he's in love with Jane, and proposes marriage to her. Jane can hardly believe it, but once convinced by the strength of Rochester's feelings she accepts his offer.

They share a kiss under the trees but a rumble of thunder has them running for home again. Once back at Thornfield, Rochester orders that Jane change out of her wet clothes and they share several passionate kisses before Mrs Fairfax sees them. The next day she confesses to Jane that she's surprised Jane is marrying Rochester since she is so young and has no experience of men. Rochester is surprised when Jane relates this to him when they're in the library and announces that they will marry within a month.

Later they head to town to buy material for Jane's wedding dress. Two nights before the wedding, Jane has a nightmare and wakes with a start to the terrifying vision of someone in her bedroom with her candle. She wants to believe Rochester's explanation that it was part of her dream, but the results are scarily real; Jane's wedding veil has been ripped in two.

As the wedding day arrives events take a turn for the worse when the wedding is interrupted by a lawyer who reveals some devastating news for Jane. He has Rochester's marriage certificate; Rochester is already married, to a Bertha Antoinette Mason - and it was Mason, her brother, who informed the lawyer. Rochester denies being already married but the certificate proves otherwise.

The wedding is called off and the party returns to Thornfield. Rochester introduces them to Bertha who is being looked after by Grace Poole. Bertha appears normal but then tries to attack Jane and once the door is locked, in a flashback, Rochester's past with Bertha is revealed. He met Bertha and Richard Mason whilst in the Caribbean some years before but was tricked into marrying her, only to be told later that her mother had spent most of her life in an asylum, and that this ran in the family...He travelled the world to try and forget what he had left behind at home until Jane came into his life.

The party leaves whilst Rochester helps Grace attend to his wife. In silence Jane sadly takes off her wedding dress and folds it away whilst Rochester vainly attempts to talk to her from outside her room.

Fave/memorable moments/quotes etc:
- I think after watching this episode, Ep 2 is my favourite though I did like this one.
- To be honest, if I was in Jane's position & was told that the only other living relative wanted to adopt me & was told I was dead, I don't think I could have forgiven that easily...
- The music - I hope the BBC releases some sort of soundtrack for this; they're apparently doing it with Doctor Who!
- Blanche being 'brushed off' by Rochester. YAY!
- The proposal scene. OMG Ruth was brilliant in this scene; I was close to tears during the hysterical crying proposal:-
(Jane & Rochester are sitting under a tree)
Rochester: "When we are parted, when you...leave me I believe that bond will snap, and I will bleed inwardly...but you'll forget me after a while..."
Jane: "I would never forget you! (standing up to face him) How can you imagine that?! What do you think I am? (sobbing) I wish I'd never been born, I wish I'd never come here! I wish I'd never grown to love Thornfield. I love Thornfield. (wipes her nose) I love it becase I have lived a full life I...I have not been trampled on. I've been treated as an equal. You have treated me as an equal! (Rochester looks at the ground) You're the best person I know and I cannot bear the thought of having to leave you!"
Rochester: (quietly) "Must you leave me Jane?"
Jane: "Of course I must because you have a wife!"
Rochester: "What do you mean?"
Jane: "Blanche Ingram of course! You're as good as married to her, you...you promised her -"
Rochester: "I have not promised Blanche anything."
Jane: "To someone who is inferior to you, someone who you have no sympathy with. Of course I must go! (slight pause as he looks up at her) Do you think that I'm a machine, that I can bear it? Do you think because I'm poor, plain, obscure and little that I have no heart?! That I am without soul? I have as much heart as you and as much soul, and if God had given me some beauty and wealth, I would make it as hard for you to leave me as it is now for me to leave you"
Rochester: (getting up) "You will not leave me Jane." (He walks over to her and embraces her but she tries to pull away)
Jane: (still sobbing) "Let me go!"
Rochester: "Jane, Jane don't struggle so."
Jane: "I'm a free person and I'll go and do as I please!"
Rochester: "Yes, yes, yes you will. (Jane stops struggling) You will decide your own destiny. (she looks up at him) Jane I offer you my hand, my heart and all my possessions..."
Jane: "You laugh at me!"
Rochester: "No I wouldn't, no. Jane, I want you to live with me, to pass through life as my second self, my best earthly companion. (slight pause as she just stares at him) Jane have you no faith in me?"
Jane: "None whatsoever."
Rochester: "You doubt me?"
Jane: "Absolutely!"
Rochester: "Jane you know I don't love Blanche; I love you like my own flesh. Say that you will marry me. Say it quickly. Jane you accept me?"
Jane: "Are you in earnest? I can hardly believe you."
Rochester: "I swear."
Jane: (smiling slightly) "Then sir -"
Rochester: "Call me by my name. Call me Edward."
Jane: "Then Edward, I will marry you." (He kisses her for a moment, then rests his chin against her forehead)
Rochester: (looking up, whispers) "God forgive me. Let no man meddle with me. I aim to keep her." (Thunder rumbles overhead)
Jane: "There is no-one to meddle; I have no family to interfere. "
Rochester: "No?" (Kisses her again. They both smile at each other and he takes her hand and they start to run home laughing)
That scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0jFPUfPeig&NR
- Bertha was scary LMAO!! The way she had that strange little smile on her face and you were waiting for her to suddenly take a swing at someone but still jumped when that time came. Eek!! I thought she was going to take a pop at Rochester rather that poor Jane! O_O
- Rochester: (about marrying Jane whilst being already married) "I risked the wrath of God to get her!" ♥
- Jane putting away her dress at the end in complete silence with Rochester calling to her outside her room. :(
- I felt sorry for Mason in Ep 2 but now OMG. Bad man! *slap* And poor Rochester finding out his wife is a complete headcase only after getting married to her!
- The whole flashback of Rochester & Bertha's marriage and then poor Rochester walking in on his wife having sex with some other guy. -_- :(
- The way Rochester looks at Jane when she's walking back home to Thornfield and she makes a comment about how surprised she is that she's glad to be returning to him again. Awwww. ♥:-
(Jane is walking in a field and spies Rochester sitting at the bottom of a tree looking through his telescope. She hesitates but then starts walking again)
Rochester: (seeing Jane walk past him & she stops) "There you are! You're back! Ungrateful thing! (closing his telescope and pointing it at her) I give you leave for a week and you go a whole month! (getting up and walking over to her) I want my money back since you've had me so little in your thoughts!"
Jane: (smiling) "I said I would be gone for as long as I was needed, and I was. And you still owe me wages!"
Rochester: "Come. Let's get you home. Adele will scream and shout 'bienvenue'!" (starts to walk back to the tree)
Jane: "Thank you... (Rochester stops and turns round to look at her) ...for your great kindess, I'm...I'm strangely glad to get back again to you (Rochester just stares at her) and wherever you are is my home, is my true home." (she smiles and starts to walk down the field. Rochester retrieves his telescope from the tree and starts to follow)
- The scene in the carriage with Rochester continuously trying to take Jane's hand and she kept pushing it away until she eventually slapped it! HAHAH! Then Jane getting Adele to sit between the pair of them finished me off!! ROFLMAO! XD
- The scene after the proposal:-
(the pair run for shelter in Thornfield courtyard. Rochester helps Jane take off her wet shawl)
Rochester: (out of breath) "Now then, take off those wet things (he places his hand on the back of her neck, brings her into him and they kiss again) Goodnight... (another kiss and he strokes the side of her face and rests it there, smiling) Goodnight my darling."
(they kiss and break apart. He pulls her back to him for another kiss. They break apart and Jane giggles. She walks past Mrs Fairfax and looks back at Rochester who seems slightly uneasy at seeing his housekeeper) ♥♥♥
