Jane Eyre Episode 4
Oct. 17th, 2006 06:07 pm-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jane wakes up from under several large rocks and wanders the moors seemingly in a bit of a daze. She falls asleep whilst reciting the Lord's prayer and calls out to Helen to wait for her (cuts to Helen on her deathbed). A local clergyman, St John Rivers, rescues her and takes her to his house. Jane wakes up in bed and John's sisters Diana and Mary speculate as to what her identity may be; Jane can't remember who she is or the events of the past few days. She becomes known as Jane Elliot as her clothes contain only initials. Whilst out for a walk with Mary & Diana she thinks she hears Rochester's voice calling her name and on exploring the Rivers' church she gets flashbacks of her and Rochester at the altar...

After deciding on a teaching position to the local girls, Jane returns to her room and remembers the events between her and Rochester just before she left Thornfield. Diana & Mary have to leave the Rivers' home to become governesses. A local woman, Miss Rosamund Oliver, has taken a fancy to John but he rejects her as he thinks she wouldn't be a good wife for him, despite the fact that John feels the same way. Jane is shocked and begs that he takes his chances with Rosamund while he still can.

Another flashback shows Rochester begging her not to leave and comes up with a plan to take Jane to a villa in the Mediterranian and live as brother and sister – no passion but "perhaps a chaste peck on the cheek" every now and then. Jane tells him they’ll talk in the morning and takes her leave – she, however, leaves Thornfield early the next morning and drops to her knees crying when the carriage leaves her alone.

A year passes and Jane has established herself with the Rivers and her new role as teacher – St. John is impressed at her success with the school and the students. He has been doing some investigating and discovers her parentage, her past at Lowood & at Thornfield. However he has not heard anything about Rochester over the past year when Jane asks him but informs her that her uncle, John Eyre, has died and has left her £20,000. She also discovers that Rivers and his sisters are her half-cousins! St. John is astonished that she revels in this piece of news rather than her inheritance and Jane asks that he bring Mary and Diana home.

However John Rivers has plans for her. Diana and Mary watch Jane and St. John walking together outside; he tells Jane of his plan to take her to Africa as his wife. Jane comes back to the house to the waiting sisters who are horrified when she tells them that their brother wants to take her to Africa and plead her to say no to this idea. Jane tells Rivers that she will give him an answer soon.

Jane takes a solitary walk on the moors and she hears an anguished Rochester calling out her name. She takes a carriage and it drops her off outside Thornfield, but her happiness vanishes instantly – Thornfield is nothing but ruins, burnt down to the ground. Rochester is believed dead and the servants have been sent away. In another flashback we see that Bertha was responsible for Thornfield being burnt to the ground, having first set Jane's wedding dress on fire. She climbs up onto the roof before jumping off; Rochester is too late to stop her.

Jane discovers Rochester’s current home near some woods and sees him coming out of the house - Rochester has slight scarring to his left eye and his left hand is bandaged. Her smile vanishes as she realises he can't see; he walks back into the house with the aid of a walking stick. Inside, Rochester is sat near the fireplace; Pilot starts barking when Jane enters the living room with a tray carrying a glass of water. As soon as he recognises her voice, Rochester grabs hold of her wrist; they are together again. :)

The next day the pair sit by the stream and Jane explains that she couldn't marry Rivers as she didn't love him. She also teases him, saying that John Rivers is a better man and more handsome than he. Rochester later admits that his old plan about them living as brother & sister wouldn't have worked. ;) He asks her to come back and sit down next to him, saying that if he can't have a wife to share his bed with, he would rather die.

Jane tells him "Your life is not yours to give up, it is mine!" and kisses him. They lie down kissing on the picnic blanket and the camera gradually pans to the left and across the gorgeous scenery. Their legs are seen intertwined and then the camera moves onto light caught upon the river.

The next scene shows both Rochester & Jane being followed by Adele, Mrs. Fairfax, all of Thornfield’s servants (including Grace Poole) and Diana and Mary (with their own husbands wrapped around their arms). Mrs. Fairfax is carrying Jane’s baby and they all sit down for a family portrait, Jane takes the child in her arms and Rochester takes the other child - the painter gets ready to paint this fine picture, the camera zooms out and we see a floral frame around the happy party and they gradually turn into the painting.

Fave/memorable scenes/quotes, you know the drill by now ;)
- Poor Jane's breakdown after remembering that event/scene. It made me want to hug her. :(
- I liked John's 2 sisters :D
- Jane telling John not to let Rosamund go. ♥

- Jane: (about Rochester) "He was the first to recognise me and to love what he saw."
- I love that little bit of music playing when Jane runs up the moors after hearing Rochester calling her - I think it was also played when she was returning to Thornfield in Episode 3. :D
- Jane's little smile when she sees Rochester again as he comes out of the house in the woods and Rochester's mutter of "Damn it..." when he thinks he's imagining things. ♥
- Rochester: "Where are my candles?! You think because I'm blind I don't need them?!" XD
- Jane & Rochester's unity scene:
(Jane pours a glass of water, holds a handkerchief under his chin and helps him drink)
Rochester: (looking confused) "George? It is you, isn't it?"
Jane: "George is in the kitchen, sir."
Rochester: (instantly grabbing her wrist as she smiles) "Who is that?"
Jane: "Pilot knows me sir!"
Rochester: (feeling her hands and fingers) (quietly) "These are Jane Eyre's fingers! I'd know them anywhere! (stands infront of her and uses his fingers to feel her face and mouth. She smiles) It is Jane!"
Jane: "It is me, sir. I'm come back."
Rochester: "You are real? (she laughs) Jane, I dream of you often, in the morning you're gone! You always were a witch." (she kisses him)
Jane: "Does that seem real?"
Rochester: "You're here to torment me!"
Jane: "I'm very real. sir. I'm an independant woman. (A tear runs down his face) My uncle died and left me £20,000 but I gave most of it away!" (They chuckle and he holds her so that his chin rests against her forehead)
Rochester: "Now I could never have dreamt such detail! (She pulls back a little so that she looks up at him) You will stay with me?"
Jane: "I will stay with you as long as I live, or unless you would prefer I go..."
Rochester: "No, no stay. You shall stay. (Sits down but still holds her hands in his) It's a ghastly sight isn't it Jane? (She sits down in front of him) I knew if you ever saw me again you would be revolted by me."
Jane: (kissing his bandaged hand) "I am sorry for this. (Kisses his left cheek) And this, (Kisses his brow) and this. But the worst of it is, one's in danger of spoiling you too much! When do you have supper?"
Rochester: "I never take supper."
Jane: "Well you shall tonight for I am very hungry!" (Smiles)
- Rochester: "You haven't lost your wickedness wherever you've been!"
- Rochester: "Jane, were there only ladies at the house where you were?" (Jane doesn't answer) ;) ♥
- Jealous!Rochester OMG! Eeeee! :D
- Rochester: "Jane, I want a wife. I want a wife, not a nurse-maid to look after me. I want a wife to share my bed every night. All day if we wish, and if I can't have that I'd rather die." ♥ ♥ ♥
And some original thoughts...
- I cried when Rochester & Jane were together again. Loved the way he kept asking her if she was the real thing - ♥ - it was so moving!

- Rochester's hand sliding down Jane's back & entwining his legs around hers when she lay on top of him and kissed him. ♥ ;)
- HOW erotic where those flashback bedroom scenes of Rochy lying on our Jane kissing her passionately whilst stroking her neck? Holy sh!t I thought I was going to combust! :P See this is a perfect example of a scene being erotic & sexy without being too graphic. Pay attention to this film people!
